DescriptionThe secret principal image of Hinata Yakushi is the seated Yakushi Nyorai at the center of its nata-bori Yakushi triad. All three figures are carved from single blocks of katsura wood and retain the distinctive surface treatment known as nata-bori; they are regarded as the oldest Buddhist images at the temple. The central figure is 116.6 cm high, while the standing Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu attendants each measure just over 123 cm. Dating to the Heian period, the wooden Yakushi Nyorai and attendant figures are designated a Important Cultural Property. Normally kept hidden, the triad is unveiled each year on Jan 1–3, Jan 8, and Apr 15 and remains the focus of Yakushi devotion at Hinata Yakushi.
