DescriptionThe Rokudo Jizo, the central image of the Motohakone Stone Buddhas, is a seated Jizo Bosatsu carved into a massive rock face. An inscription dates it to 1300. The image is about 3.5 m high overall, with the figure itself measuring about 3.15 m excluding the lotus pedestal. It was designated a Important Cultural Property (sculpture) in 1974, while the stone-buddha complex as a whole is a National Historic Site. Representing the Jizo faith that developed along the Hakone route in the Kamakura period, the cliff-carved image can still be viewed today inside its reconstructed protective shelter.
