Description

Abe Monju-in’s main hall enshrines the National Treasure Tokai Monju group completed in 1203 by Kaikei. Monju Bosatsu, Manjushri, rides a lion at the center and is accompanied by Vimalakīrti, Buddhapālita, King Udayana, and the youthful Sudhana. The five figures portray a journey across a sea of clouds to dispel the delusions of living beings and bestow wisdom. Monju’s sword cuts through ignorance, while the lotus symbolizes compassion, giving the monumental group a balance of intellectual clarity and gentle guidance.
