DescriptionShorinji’s Kannon Hall houses the National Treasure standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu. Originally transmitted at Daigorinji on sacred Mt. Miwa, the statue carries memories of shinbutsu-shugo and was protected at Shorinji after the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji period. Its slender upright form conveys the nobility of Tempyo sculpture and an almost unapproachable stillness. Together with the temple’s view over the Yamato landscape, the image leaves a deep and lingering impression.
