DescriptionShōrin-ji’s Kannon Hall houses the National Treasure standing Eleven-Headed Kannon, a masterpiece of Nara-period wood-core dry-lacquer sculpture. The image was originally enshrined at Daigorin-ji on sacred Mount Miwa and was brought to Shōrin-ji during the separation of Shinto and Buddhism in the Meiji era. The purpose-built Kannon Hall completed in 2022 allows the statue to be viewed from all sides. Its upright, finely balanced form preserves both the memory of ancient shrine-temple worship and the dignified stillness of Tenpyō sculpture.
