Description

Sogen-ji’s stone standing Shaka Nyorai is a monumental 4.85-meter stone Buddha standing to the right of the main hall. Erected in 1691, the fully carved figure is joined at the torso and stands on a lotus pedestal. While Shaka Nyorai is usually shown with a preaching mudra, this image unusually presses both hands together in gassho; Mobara City explains that this may reflect the constraints and structural needs of stone carving. Its childlike face filled with compassion and its shallow, orderly robe folds are also distinctive. It is the largest surviving stone Buddhist image in the city. Chiba Prefecture’s official tourism site lists Sogen-ji as open 8:30–17:00 daily, allowing general worship in the temple grounds.
