Description

The wooden Four Heavenly Kings enshrined in Shokaku-ji’s Shaka Hall are monumental guardian figures: Jikokuten is 213 cm high, Zochoten 203 cm, Komokuten 204 cm and Tamonten 207 cm, so all four exceed two meters. The group is designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Chiba Prefecture. Their substantial bodies and wrathful expressions with crystal-inlaid eyes convey the realistic power of Kamakura-period sculpture, and they are thought to date to the Kamakura period, no later than around 1327. Chiba Prefecture notes that over-life-size Four Heavenly Kings are rare in the Kanto region. The temple officially states that the Shaka Hall is opened during daytime in good weather so visitors can worship the statues.
