Description

Kosaiji is a Shingon Chizan-school temple traditionally founded in 1190 by the monk Ishiya, with Jizo Bodhisattva as its principal image. Every August 16, the temple grounds host Kiraigo, a classical Buddhist drama with a tradition said to span about 800 years. Nationally designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, it is described as Japan’s only classical Buddhist drama of its kind, teaching karmic retribution and the triumph of good through scenes of suffering in hell and salvation by a bodhisattva. During the opening scene, an ogress also holds infants in the mushi-fuji rite, a blessing for their health. The performance offers a distinctive way to experience the salvific ideal of Jizo through a living Buddhist tradition.
