DescriptionThe Asahi Kaiun Daikokuten enshrined in Mano-ji’s main hall is a wooden standing Daikokuten about 141.2 cm tall. Wearing a hood, carrying a large sack, holding a mallet in the right hand and standing with both feet on rice bales, it has a commanding form and is carved from a single block of camphor wood. Chiba Prefecture considers it a work that can be traced back to the Kamakura period and notes its importance as an early Daikokuten image surviving in the Kanto region. Temple tradition says that in 860, Jikaku Daishi Ennin perceived Daikokuten appearing in the rising sun and carved that form into an image; it has since been worshipped as Asahi Kaiun Daikokuten. The image is unveiled at midnight on February 6 during the annual Daikokuten Grand Festival.
