DescriptionGyogan-ji's wooden standing Amida Nyorai is a 97 cm late-Heian image carved from a single block of hinoki wood and finished with black lacquer and gold leaf. Its gentle face, softly carved robe folds and full-bodied form show the Jocho style, while the spiral curls on the back of the head are arranged in concentric circles, an unusual feature not found on other Nyorai images of the period. Temple tradition identifies it as a guardian image of Taira no Shigemori, and Isumi City considers it a work from the Kyoto-area central tradition. The city lists the statue as viewable, and Gyogan-ji offers indoor viewing outside its seasonal closure.
