DescriptionThe Iwaya Kannon-do yagura complex in Kazuma, Futtsu, consists of 14 layered cave chambers made by reusing horizontal tombs from the Kofun period. A Kannon hall stands midway up the cliff, while the cave walls preserve numerous cliff-carved Buddhist images and gorinto dating from the medieval through Edo periods. In the U-shaped corridor cave behind the hall, Nio guardians are carved at both entrances, followed by many relief Buddhist figures along the walls. Chiba Prefecture’s official tourism site presents the site as open year-round, about a 15-minute walk from JR Kazusa-Minato Station, with parking available. Walking through the rock-cut passages while viewing a succession of carved Buddhist figures makes this one of Chiba’s most distinctive visual and experiential Buddhist-image sites.
