DescriptionThe wooden Kongo Rikishi statues guarding the gate of Hokko-ji in Iwakuma, Misaki, Isumi City are large Nio figures measuring 271.8 cm for Agyo and 263.2 cm for Ungyo, and are designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Chiba Prefecture. Regarded as outstanding works of the mid-Kamakura period, a repair tablet dated 1835 for the Agyo statue records that they were established in 1255 by a woman of the Taira clan. Although repaired repeatedly, the pair largely retains its original form and is noted for a restrained yet dynamic expression of physical power. Isumi City's official information explicitly states that the statues are open for viewing, allowing visitors to see these 2.6- to 2.7-meter Kamakura-period guardians at the temple gate.
