DescriptionThe Nio guardian statues of Kannonkyo-ji are so widely revered that the temple itself is popularly known as Shibayama Nioson. The pair is designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Shibayama Town. At this ancient temple founded in the Nara period, the Nio have long been worshipped for protection from fire, theft and misfortune. They can normally be worshipped from the lower section of the Nio Hall, while the temple designates April 16 to May 16 each year as a special close-worship period, allowing visitors into the inner area to approach near the statues' hands. The combination of regular visibility and an annual opportunity for unusually close worship makes this one of Chiba's more experiential Buddhist-image sites.
