DescriptionThe wooden Kongo Rikishi statues at the Nio Gate of Tofuku-ji in Hiregasaki, Nagareyama, form a pair of Agyo and Ungyo guardians designated as Tangible Cultural Properties by Nagareyama City. The city dates them to the Edo period and lists them among the temple's representative sculptural cultural properties. The official Nagareyama tourism association also introduces the large Kongo Rikishi as a highlight of the temple grounds, and a city-organized historical walking tour included viewing the statues. The Thousand Buddha Hall is normally closed to the public, but these guardian figures can be seen at the Nio Gate during a regular temple visit, offering a close view of powerful Buddhist protector images at the temple entrance.
