Description

Ryusho-in's principal image is a tiny Eleven-Headed Kannon measuring one sun two bu (about 3.6 cm), enshrined inside a larger Kannon image about one jo two shaku tall, traditionally attributed to Jocho. Known as Namegawa Kannon, it is the devotional focus of the 28th temple of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage, traditionally founded by Jikaku Daishi in 838. It has long been revered for longevity, good fortune, safe childbirth and healthy child-rearing. Because the small principal image is housed within the larger Kannon, visitors worship the larger image in the main hall as the container of the hidden principal image.
