DescriptionThe iron Buddhist head preserved at Dainichi-do in the Yamada Daimon district is a Tangible Cultural Property designated by Chiba Prefecture. Although only the portion above the neck survives, the monumental Bodhisattva head measures 113 cm high; the crown of the head is missing. It was cast as a hollow cylinder in a single mold, with the front and back mold halves joined behind the ears, and the clean inner surface demonstrates highly accomplished casting. Isumi City describes it as the only surviving pre-Edo-period iron Buddhist image in Chiba Prefecture. It is unveiled from 10:00 to 15:00 on the first Sunday of every month, allowing regular public viewing of this extraordinary giant iron head.
