DescriptionJoto-ji's wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The 140.9 cm image is made of joined hinoki wood and entirely covered with lacquer and gold leaf. Its fine spiral curls, downcast carved eyes, full face and graceful robe folds preserve the Jocho style of the late Heian period, and Choshi City describes it as a representative early-Kamakura example in the Kanto region. Revered locally as Tokoyoda Yakushi, it has long attracted prayers for recovery from eye ailments. The image is normally unveiled only once a year, every January 8; in 2026 it was open to the public from 7:00 to 12:00.
