DescriptionShogaku-in's wooden standing Shaka Nyorai is a Chiba Prefecture-designated Tangible Cultural Property in the Seiryoji style, modeled on the famous Shakyamuni image at Seiryo-ji in Kyoto. The 166 cm statue is made of kaya wood using joined-block construction. Distinctive features include rope-like spiral curls, a robe covering both shoulders up to the neck, and fine symmetrical wave-like folds descending from the chest to the feet. The right hand forms the fear-dispelling gesture and the left the wish-granting gesture. Repair plaques inside record restorations in 1546 and 1674, and the image is thought to date from the late Kamakura period. Normally hidden, it is unveiled once each year during the April Hana Matsuri.
