DescriptionRyusui-ji's pair of wooden Kongo Rikishi are designated Tangible Cultural Properties of Chiba Prefecture. The Agyo figure is a 230 cm single-block pine sculpture, while the 235 cm Ungyo figure is made of pine in joined-block construction. Agyo raises a vajra, while Ungyo assumes a more restrained stance. Their wrathful expressions, musculature and swirling garments are powerful without excessive exaggeration, and the style is considered to date from the late Kamakura period. The guardian pair can be viewed at the Nio Gate during a regular temple visit.
