Description

Hasedera’s main hall enshrines its Important Cultural Property Eleven-Headed Kannon, a 10.18-meter wooden statue completed in 1538 and one of the largest wooden Buddhist images in Japan. Holding a shakujō staff and prayer beads in the right hand and a vase in the left, the figure stands on a stone slab with the right foot slightly forward, ready to answer the prayers of the faithful. This distinctive iconography became the model for Hase Kannon images throughout Japan. During special spring and autumn openings, visitors may enter the sanctuary and touch the statue’s feet.
