DescriptionThe Shinzan Mantai-butsu is housed in a small hall in Shinzan village. Approximately 12,000 small Jizo Bosatsu figures carved from cedar are arranged from beneath the floor across all four walls and up to the ceiling, filling the entire three-bay-square interior. Tradition says that the monk Fumyo established the hall in 1714 and carved the Jizo images to memorialize a disciple who died tragically and children who died young. The site remains an object of local devotion and is designated a Tangible Folk Cultural Property of Akita Prefecture. Located near the Namahage Museum and Shinzan Shrine, it is normally open for free viewing.
