DescriptionA roughly 5 m-tall Amida Nyorai stands in the grounds of Daienji Temple and is known as the Oyu Daibutsu. Temple tradition says that only the head of a Buddhist statue washed ashore during a major flood in the mid-Edo period. The original date of the image is unknown, but the present full figure was reconstructed around the surviving head in 2008. Daienji stands in the Oyu Onsen area, where a huge cedar said to be about 2,000 years old stands by the temple gate. Together, the ancient tree and the Great Buddha convey the area's long religious history.
