DescriptionA bronze seated Amida Nyorai stands in the grounds of Tenneiji Temple in Kakunodate. The Great Buddha was created to memorialize Ashina Chizurumaru, the young lord of Kakunodate who died in childhood, and is attributed to the caster Sato Sajibei. Chizurumaru died in an accident at Tenneiji in 1653, bringing the Ashina line to an end. Tradition holds that a kutsunugi-ishi, or stepping stone, associated with the accident was reused in the statue's pedestal. Tenneiji is the family temple of the Ashina clan and offers visitors a place to worship while encountering Kakunodate's history.
