Description

This wooden seated Fudo Myoo is worshipped as the principal image of Fudenji Temple and is popularly known as the Yakuyoke Fudo, or Fudo for protection from misfortune. The statue is said to preserve stylistic features associated with the Kamakura-period master sculptor Unkei. Fudenji, a temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism, was founded in the early 1600s by the monk Yugen, who had also served as a warrior of the Satake clan, with Akita domain lord Satake Yoshinobu regarded as its founder-patron. The statue is designated a Cultural Property of Akita City and remains the principal image of Temple No. 7 of the Tohoku 36 Fudo pilgrimage.
