Description

This seated bronze Amida Nyorai is enshrined in the Main Hall of Zenryoji Temple. The head, torso, knees, and hands were cast separately and joined in a method resembling the joined-block technique used for wooden sculpture. Although the image inherits stylistic features of the late Heian period, details of the drapery and body suggest a Kamakura-period date. Large bronze images of this type are rare, as most gilt-bronze Buddhist statues of the period were much smaller. It is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
