DescriptionMurō-ji’s Golden Hall enshrines a National Treasure standing image now worshipped as Shaka Nyorai, although research shows that it was originally created as Yakushi Nyorai. Carved from a single kaya tree in the early Heian period, the figure is distinguished by flowing wave-like drapery known as renpa-shiki, a style so closely associated with the temple that it is also called the Murō-ji style. The halo, painted with seven seated Buddhas and floral arabesques, adds luminous richness to the statue’s balanced and solemn presence.
