DescriptionMorinji Temple’s Funanori Kannon is an 87 cm wooden standing Sho Kannon Bodhisattva depicted riding in a boat and designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Yokoze Town. It was originally enshrined in a small hall on Mt. Hinatayama and came to be revered as a “guiding Kannon” for pilgrims entering Chichibu from Edo via Hanno and Ashigakubo. The ornate palace-style zushi (miniature shrine) bears a 1779 inscription naming a Buddhist sculptor and lacquerer from Tawaramachi in Asakusa, Edo, and preserves the high craftsmanship of the period. The unusual boat-riding image is closely tied to the history of the old pilgrimage route. Yokoze tourism information lists it as open year-round, and the image can be worshipped from outside the building.
