Description

The principal image of Nosakaji, Temple No. 12 of the Chichibu Thirty-Four Kannon Pilgrimage, is a wooden standing Sho Kannon Bodhisattva. The figure measures 156 cm, is carved from a single block of wood with an interior hollow, and is traditionally dated to the Fujiwara period. Chichibu City identifies it as the temple’s principal image. The official pilgrimage site also notes Nosakaji’s seasonal flowers and its 1741 gate, inside which figures including Enma, King of the Underworld, are displayed. Normally hidden from view, the principal image is being unveiled from March 18 to November 30, 2026 during the once-in-twelve-years Horse-Year Grand Unveiling, offering a rare chance to worship this large ancient Kannon directly.
