Description

Shoboji, known as Iwadono Kannon and Temple No. 10 of the Bando Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage, has 188 stone Buddhist images set along the cliff beside its Kannon Hall. They represent the 100 Kannon of the Saigoku, Bando and Chichibu pilgrimages—33, 33 and 34 images respectively—together with replicas of the principal deities of the Shikoku 88-Temple Pilgrimage. Higashimatsuyama City describes worship here as carrying the same merit as completing both the Japan 100 Kannon and Shikoku 88 pilgrimages. The sight of many Buddhist figures lining the natural rock face is distinctive, and the outdoor images can be worshipped during normal visiting hours.
