Description

The wooden seated Sacred-Monk Manjushri Bodhisattva displayed in Jikoji Temple’s Kinrenzo Treasure Hall is a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture. An inscription found during conservation work identifies the sculptor as Kokei and dates the image to 1295. Carved from hinoki cypress in joined-block construction with a raised-bottom form of interior hollowing, the statue has a solid physique and deep, sweeping drapery folds characteristic of vigorous Kamakura-period sculpture. Kokei is considered a sculptor in the Kei-school tradition associated with masters such as Unkei and Kaikei. Unlike the temple’s hidden principal Kannon image, this statue can normally be seen year-round in the treasure hall.
