Description

Jikoji Temple's principal image, the Eleven-Faced, Thousand-Armed and Thousand-Eyed Kannon Bodhisattva, is enshrined in the Kannon Hall at Temple No. 9 of the Bando Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage. The 270.0 cm wooden standing Senju Kannon is a Tangible Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture. Made of hinoki cypress in joined-block construction, with carved eyes and lacquer, its head was created in 1540 by the master Buddhist sculptor Hogen Chokei. The rest of the image was lost in a fire in 1802 and rebuilt that same year by the Edo-Kanda Buddhist sculptor Suzuki Choshiro. This monumental hidden image is unveiled every year on the second Sunday of April and on April 17.
