Description

Monjuji Temple's principal image is a hidden wooden image of Manjushri Bodhisattva seated on a lion. Temple tradition dates the statue to the Muromachi period and says it was rescued from the fire that destroyed Nomanji in 1481, then kept at the home of a representative of the temple's parishioners until the temple was rebuilt. Monjuji describes the image as one of Japan's three celebrated Manjushri Bodhisattvas, together with Kireto Monju in Kyoto and Kameoka Monju in Yamagata, and it has long attracted worshippers seeking wisdom and academic success. The principal image is unveiled at the annual Monju festival. It was opened on February 25 in 2026, and the temple has announced that from 2027 the festival will be held every January 25.
