Description

The bronze Shogun Jizo standing statue at Daichu-in was formerly enshrined as the sacred image of a small Atago shrine on the mountainside behind the temple. It is a solid bronze figure cast in a single pour and bears no inscription, but its refined facial expression, jewel and staff, and dynamically twisted waist suggest a date around the middle of the Edo period. It is an example of the Shogun Jizo images found widely in the Chichibu region and is designated a Tangible Cultural Property by Yokoze Town as a work demonstrating the high skill of its model maker and caster. Yokoze Town officially lists it as publicly viewable, and Saitama Prefecture's official tourism site presents it as one of Daichu-in's highlights.
