Description

Iwatsuki Daishi Mirokumitsu-ji is an old temple of the Chisan school of Shingon Buddhism, traditionally said to have been founded in 774. Its underground Buddhist hall enshrines the principal deities of the eighty-eight temples of the Shikoku pilgrimage together with Kobo Daishi, and preserves sand brought from each pilgrimage temple. Buddhist images line the underground route, where visitors can perform an osunafumi pilgrimage by stepping on the sand associated with each sacred site as they make the circuit. About a ten-minute walk from Iwatsuki Station, the hall offers an accessible way to encounter the devotional world of the Shikoku pilgrimage. Moving through the dim underground passage and worshipping the many images in sequence is itself the distinctive experience of this site.
