Description

Yakushi-ji’s Golden Hall enshrines the National Treasure bronze Yakushi Triad, associated with the images consecrated in 697. Yakushi Nyorai, the Medicine Buddha, sits at the center, accompanied by Nikkō and Gakkō Bodhisattvas, whose graceful, gently curving postures are masterpieces of Hakuhō sculpture. Originally gilded and richly ornamented, the triad survived the fire that destroyed the hall in 1528, although its halos were lost. It continues to embody prayers for health, relief from suffering, and happiness in this life.
