DescriptionIwa Kannon, also known as Endo Iwa Kannon, is a group of cliff-carved Buddhist images consisting of 33 Kannon figures and one Benzaiten carved into a rock face about 25 meters high. The official Kawaba Village tourism guide says that villagers carved the Kannon images in the mid-Edo period to pray for the village's peace and prosperity. The figures are said to have originally been painted, and traces of red and green pigment still remain today. Designated an Important Cultural Property by Kawaba Village, the site allows visitors to worship the Kannon images directly across the distinctive rock face. A wildlife electric fence is installed, but the official guide states that visitors may remove it to enter, and parking for several cars is available.
