DescriptionShinpukuzan Horinji preserves a group of eight Obaku Buddhist sculptures: a seated Shaka Nyorai, standing Ananda and Mahakasyapa, Kinnara-o Bosatsu, standing Idaten, a Garanjin image, the head of Bodhidharma, and a seated Miroku Bosatsu. The group was designated an Important Cultural Property of Gunma Prefecture on March 18, 2022. The Shaka Nyorai was made in 1697 by Korin, the third son of Koyu. The other seven images came from the former Kosaiji Temple and date from around 1671 to 1678; most are attributed to Koyu, a master Buddhist sculptor of Kyoto's Shichijo workshop. After Kosaiji was abolished, the sculptures were transferred to Horinji. Reflecting Ming-dynasty Chinese Buddhist sculptural styles characteristic of early Obaku Buddhism, they can still be worshipped in the Main Hall. Visiting hours are 8:00–17:00.
