Description

Nichirinji Temple's wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva is an Important Cultural Property of Gunma Prefecture believed to date from the late Heian period. Carved from a single block of katsura wood from the top of the head through the pedestal, it retains clear rounded-chisel marks characteristic of natabori carving. The statue measures 151.5 cm in overall height, with an image height of 128.5 cm. It is now kept in a fireproof repository behind the Kannon Hall and is normally closed to the public, but is unveiled each year on January 11. This ancient image has long been an object of local Kannon devotion.
