DescriptionThe principal wooden seated Shaka Nyorai enshrined in the Shaka Hall of Seiryuzan Kichijo-ji is a joined-block wooden image measuring three shaku, four sun and four bu in height. Made of hinoki, it sits cross-legged on a lotus pedestal with the meditation mudra; its narrow eyes, oval head and broad drapery folds show characteristics of the late Kamakura period. The temple states that it was probably made in Kyoto or Nara, and it is designated an Important Cultural Property of Gunma Prefecture. Edo-period Monju and Fugen Bodhisattvas flank it to form a Shaka Triad. Shaka Hall is included in the regular visitor route, allowing the image to be worshipped together with the grounds of this well-known flower temple.
