Description

Chūgū-ji’s principal image is the National Treasure Bodhisattva in contemplative half-lotus pose, traditionally identified as Nyoirin Kannon. Created in the Asuka period from joined pieces of camphor wood, the figure rests one hand lightly against the cheek as though pondering how to free the world from suffering. Its gentle gaze and celebrated archaic smile convey neither distance nor intimidation, but an intimate, reflective compassion that has watched over this ancient nunnery for more than thirteen centuries.
