Description

Nagaoka Hyakuana is a group of 52 rock-cut chambers arranged on the southern slope of the Utsunomiya hills. Each chamber, about 1 m high and wide, was excavated as a tomb, and Kannon images and other figures are carved on the rear walls. Utsunomiya’s official tourism site introduces the site as a Tochigi Prefecture-designated cultural property and also records a tradition that Kobo Daishi carved the images in a single night. The combination of rock-cut chambers and Buddhist carvings creates a distinctive setting, and visitors can view the Kannon images carved on the rear walls. Viewing is free, free parking is available, and the site is reachable from JR Utsunomiya Station by bus and a short walk.
