DescriptionSaikoin Temple preserves a wooden seated Dainichi Nyorai. Tochigi Prefecture dates this Kongokai Dainichi Nyorai to the mid-11th century in the Heian period and notes that it forms the chiken-in mudra. Carved from hinoki cypress, the head, torso, and upper arms are formed from a single block; the back is split from the nape to the base and hollowed out. The figure wears a high topknot and crown band, with finely incised hair falling over both shoulders, an iconographic form described as unique within the prefecture. It is considered the work of a local Buddhist sculptor and was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Tochigi Prefecture in 1991. Advance contact is required for viewing.
