Description

The Higiri Jizo at Nehanji Temple is a wooden standing Jizo Bosatsu. Made in the Kamakura period using joined-wood construction, it is designated a Cultural Property of Sano City. A local tradition says that a wish will be granted when one sets a specific deadline for it, and the image is affectionately known as Higiri Jizo. It is normally closed to the public, but the image is opened on the 24th of every month, making the viewing conditions clear. The opportunity to see a Kamakura-period Jizo image within a living tradition of worship is one of its main attractions.
