Description

Senjuin Temple, an unstaffed temple within Senjuyama Park, enshrines a wooden seated Senju Kannon Bosatsu. Kanuma City dates the image to the Kamakura period (14th century). It is 51.4 cm high, made of joined hinoki wood, covered with lacquered cloth and gold leaf, with gold pigment on the body and crystal eyes. Its realistic, refined face is marked by a firm mouth and full cheeks. Some of the small Buddha heads and auxiliary arms are later replacements, while the boat-shaped halo and nine-tier lotus pedestal date to the middle Edo period. The image was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Kanuma City in 1981. It is normally closed to the public, but the main hall opens on the 1st of each month; if the park is closed or it rains, the opening is moved to the following day.
