DescriptionTokuzoji Temple’s Gohyaku Rakan Hall houses a group of wooden Arhat statues. Inside the hall, built in 1813, are 513 figures, each with a different expression and gesture. Arhats represent enlightened disciples of Shakyamuni, and at Tokuzoji the statues are affectionately known for the idea that visitors may find one that resembles themselves. The 513 wooden Arhat statues together with the Rakan Hall were designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Tochigi Prefecture in 1968. Tokuzoji is also open to community interaction under the nickname “Ping-Pong Temple,” but viewing the Five Hundred Arhats requires an advance reservation.
