DescriptionHeiwa Kannon is a 27 m-high Kannon carved into the rock wall at Oya Park. Created to commemorate those who died in World War II and to pray for world peace, this monumental image was carved entirely by hand into the rock face of a former open-air Oya stone quarry over six years beginning in 1948. Utsunomiya City also presents the 27 m-high Heiwa Kannon as one of the park’s principal features, and it is now familiar to both visitors and local residents. From the observation deck reached by stairs, visitors can see its gentle expression at close range and look out over the town of Oya. Oya Park is open year-round and free of charge, and the image can be worshipped outdoors.
