DescriptionThe wooden seated Shakyamuni Nyorai, principal image of Daienji Temple, is an Ibaraki Prefecture-designated cultural property. The 146 cm statue is carved from zelkova wood. Its slightly large head, gentle childlike face, fine spiral curls, and shallow parallel robe folds show characteristics of the Jocho style in the Kanto region at the end of the Heian period in the 12th century. The position with the left leg crossed above the right and damage to the fingertips of the left hand have led to the suggestion that the image was originally Yakushi Nyorai and was altered to Shakyamuni during a later repair. An inscription inside records repairs carried out in 1689 by the master Buddhist sculptor Jakugen. Worship is normally from outside, but recent in-person viewing examples are known; visitors wishing to see the principal image should confirm with the temple in advance.
