DescriptionThe wooden standing Miroku Buddha preserved at Miroku Kyokai is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Made in 1247, the statue is 175.2 cm high. It is constructed from joined hinoki wood, finished with lacquer and gold leaf, and fitted with crystal eyes; its double-ring halo and pedestal also retain original material from the time of construction. Large spiral curls, a low cranial protuberance, and complex robe folds show both Song-dynasty influence and features of Kamakura sculpture. An ink inscription inside the statue identifies it as an image commissioned through the vow of Kasama Tokitomo. It is normally closed to the public, but Kasama City states that it is shown each year at the April 8 Hana Matsuri. Viewing at other times requires prior approval obtained through the city Board of Education.
