Description

The Yakushi Triad preserved at Sakuyama Tamonin Yakushiji Temple is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. The central seated Yakushi Nyorai is 137.8 cm high and made of split-and-joined hinoki wood. Its powerful, stern expression and substantial body retain the gentle treatment of robe folds associated with the Heian period while showing techniques of the early Kamakura period. Inside the statue is a 4.3 cm bronze seated Yakushi thought to date from the Heian period, and the central image is accompanied by standing images of Nikko and Gakko Bodhisattva. The group was designated an Important Cultural Property in 1911. It is normally closed to the public, but tourism information updated in 2026 states that it is unveiled for New Year's worship on January 1 and the Hana Matsuri on April 8; an actual unveiling was also confirmed at the 2025 Hana Matsuri.
