Description

Shakyamuni Nyorai is enshrined in the nationally designated Important Cultural Property three-story pagoda of Oyama-ji Temple, popularly known as Tomiya Kannon. Inside the pagoda, Shakyamuni Nyorai occupies the center front, with Fugen Bosatsu to the west and Monju Bosatsu to the east. An inscription on the pagoda's finial jewel records that it was rebuilt in 1465 with Tagaya Tomotsune as chief patron and the carpenter Soami Ieyoshi and his heir among the builders, making it one of the few surviving pagodas from the Muromachi period in the Kanto region or farther north. The interior is not normally open for unrestricted viewing, but the temple's current official notice announces a special opening on November 21–23, 2026, from 9:00 to 16:00, with a ¥500 viewing fee. This provides an opportunity to see the three enshrined figures inside the pagoda.
