DescriptionThe standing Yakushi Nyorai enshrined in Myokoji Temple's Yakushi Hall is popularly known as the “Joroku Yakushi.” It is a joined-block hinoki wood sculpture with a lacquered and colored surface. Official sources differ on its height: the Ibaraki Prefectural Board of Education gives 3.6 m, while Miho Village gives 4.8 m. Its full, dignified style suggests a Muromachi-period date, and it was designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Ibaraki Prefecture in 1958. An internal survey in 1991 found ink inscriptions and wooden plaques showing that the image was repaired in 1706. Tourism information features it as “Myokoji Temple / Joroku Yakushi,” but no viewing hours for the interior of the Yakushi Hall are stated, so checking with the temple before visiting is recommended.
